A subsidiary of Cummings Foundation, Institute for World Justice (IWJ) has two major missions: to use education to help prevent future genocides and other intercultural violence and injustices, and to aid in the post-genocide recovery and rebuilding of Rwanda. Currently, IWJ funds Holocaust and genocide education programs at Tufts University and Salem State University, in an effort to teach the next generation to be active in confronting societal conditions that might lead to genocide. Additionally, through invitation-only grants, IWJ supports a limited number of national and international organizations addressing issues of genocide, primarily in Rwanda.

As a place-based philanthropic initiative, the Cummings $25 Million Grant Program seeks to support nonprofits in Essex, Middlesex, and Suffolk counties in eastern Massachusetts. Each year, this program awards 140 grants to a diverse group of charities. These awards include 100 grants of $100,000 each, plus 40 ten-year grants of up to $500,000 each. These grants fund a wide variety of local causes, including underserved populations, healthcare, social justice, and education. The Cummings Foundation $25 Million Grant Program webpage offers a great deal of information, including a timeline, eligibility requirements, and funding priorities.
