Cummings Foundation Volunteers

The Foundation has developed an effective system for selecting grant winners, and over the past few years, it has included more and more outside involvement from professional friends of the Foundation. This system is part of Joyce and Bill Cummings' ongoing efforts to greatly decrease their personal participation in decisions of this nature, ensuring that the work and impact of the Foundation are not reliant on them.

During the 2018 grant cycle, more than 75 carefully selected volunteers are generously serving on various committees. By tapping into the deep expertise in Greater Boston's professional community, we hope to increase the likelihood that funding will benefit the most promising local charities. What's more, we believe that exposing volunteers to hundreds of nonprofits has the potential to promote individual philanthropy.

Past and current volunteers include a former White House staffer for First Lady Michelle Obama, a retired justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, former state legislators, CEOs, a Boston Globe reporter, and a renowned cardiologist, among many other Boston area professionals and distinguished citizens.

As regards the $100K for 100 program, at least half of the 100 grants each year are determined completely by outside volunteers; we refer to these as our "Community Decision" winners. The other half are "Early Decision" winners, determined by Foundation staff.

Cummings Foundation is most grateful to the volunteers listed below, who have given time and great thought to identifying outstanding local nonprofits to fund.

Lead Volunteers

Bob D. Keefe, Esq.
Since Bob began volunteering in fall 2015, he has been a tireless supporter of Cummings Foundation and local nonprofits. This prominent Boston attorney retired after 40 years with WilmerHale, and he has played an integral role in piloting multiple volunteer programs at the Foundation.

Susan Lewis Solomont
As Cummings Foundation's pro bono director of volunteers, Susan serves as a strategic adviser and the primary contact for the 28-member Site Visits Committee. She brings a wealth of experience from her long career as a consultant for both corporate and private philanthropy, plus 15 years in fundraising.
