Independent and Assisted
living in Boston Area
|
| |
|
By way of recent history,
New Horizons retirement community opened in Marlborough,
MA in October 1994. This followed a complete rebuilding
of the former Madonna Hall School for Girls, at 400
Hemenway Street, Marlborough, MA. This independent and
assisted living community in Massachusetts is just down
the road from Longfellow's historic Wayside Inn, and
was earlier the longtime family farm of Marlborough
resident Joseph Bouvier, who operated a well-known apple
orchard there for decades.
|
| |
|
New Horizons is a private,
non-sectarian community on a delightful 40-acre country
campus. Altogether, this New Horizons accommodates up
to 500 seniors, and generally has only a short waiting
list, or none at all. Seniors enjoy a wide variety of
personalized living plans.
|
| |
|
The natural beauty
of the area offers New Horizons' residents a lovely
tranquil environment with lots of broad meadows and
other green space for quiet walks, or just sitting with
a friend. Assisted and independent living residents
come and go as they like on a 24-hour basis, and often
journey to shopping areas in Marlborough and Sudbury,
MA in New Horizons' private, climatized bus.
The beautiful country-like campus is
a half mile north of U.S. Route 20, at the end of Wilson
Street. New Horizons' Boston retirement community prizes
its rich heritage and diversity.
|
| |
|
Although both New Horizons
assisted living communities in Massachusetts are entirely
nondenominational, the Marlborough campus is one of
few communities anywhere to offer both daily Catholic
Mass, in its own beautiful 200-seat chapel, and regular
on-site Protestant and Jewish services as well. Overall,
of those residents who express a religious affiliation,
New Horizons residents appear to be about 40 percent
Catholic, 30 percent Protestant, 10 percent Jewish and
20 percent other.
|
| |
|
|
Many Jewish
assisted living residents in Massachusetts enjoy
dinner together as part of their weekly Friday
evening Shabbat observance. The private Bill Miller
Dining Room is normally used for this purpose,
but the adjacent town center is available for
larger Seder or Passover services.
|
|
| |
|
Weekly Hymn Sings
are an ever-popular event at New Horizons.

The very large 86-degree
heated indoor swimming pool is another joy for many
residents in Marlborough. At a consistent depth of 3'
6", the pool is perfect for the water exercise
programs. Other special attractions include frequent
shopping trips into town, and numerous social and entertainment
events, which give residents plenty to do.
|
| |
|
One resident's daughter
put it very well. "I started to get puzzled after
a while when Mom never seemed to be around to answer
the phone anymore. That hadn't happened in years. It
took me a while to realize that she now has a life again"!
She told us her mom had spent eight years sitting by
the phone in case it rang.

Affordable assisted living in MA
The all-inclusive rates for vacant,
strictly private suites in New Horizons' independent
living sections start at around $2,100. These rates
include three gourmet meals per day, as well as housekeeping,
local scheduled transportation, basic cable TV service,
free local telephone, a heavy schedule of appropriate
activities, etc. If personal assistance is needed,
a care plan is provided and individualized additional
care is made available at additional cost.
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
Residents who live
in Building 400 may receive MA assisted living services
from our Medicare-certified on-site home health agency.
Residents who elect to have this additional service
pay an additional monthly fee beginning at $956, which
includes an average of one hour of personal assisted
living services per day. Convenient services include
assistance with daily living activities, meal escorts,
medication reminders, special activity programs, and
much more. All residents pay a 100 percent refundable
$30,000 Entrance Fee upon moving in.
|
| |
|
Other residents (in
the independent living suites) who would like such services
on a less frequent schedule (as little, for instance,
as laundry once a week), may arrange them directly with
our on-site home health providers. Low cost assisted
living for residents from Concord, Sudbury, Framingham,
Wellesley, Weston, Waltham, Wayland and Worcester, MA
as well as Marlborough.
An internationally
known Alzheimer care program, operated by Hearthstone
Alzheimer Care, Ltd., and 130 spacious, independent
living apartments in brand new buildings (completed
in June 2002) round out the wide spectrum of living
choices this community offers. The facility is now one
of the largest, most affordable retirement communities
in New England, with accommodations for more than 500
residents. Serving residents and their families from
the entire Metrowest area.

New Horizons at Marlborough,
LLC is a not-for-profit entity which leases its facility
from Cummings Foundation, Inc., but is itself solely
responsible for all operational issues. The city of
Marlborough benefits from this association, especially
through the McKeown Scholars Program. Founded in 1996,
this scholarship has already awarded more than one million
dollars in direct financial aid to students in communities
where Cummings Properties has significant interests.
|
| |
|
Both
heavily endowed not-for-profit entities are financially
very strong and conservative, and were developed by
the same family which developed Cummings Park in Woburn,
MA and Cummings Center in Beverly, MA. Significantly,
there is no debt or mortgage of any kind on any part
of either New Horizons' property!

This New Horizons
alone has a staff of more than 100 warm, caring people,
almost all from Marlborough or abutting towns. Employment
opportunities often exist, however, and interested people
who would truly enjoy working with our older population
are encouraged to contact New Horizons at 508-460-5000.
|
| |
|
The community's executive
director, Robert O'Connor (508-460-5000), has managed
the community since before its opening in August 1994.
He has more than 25 years experience in the long-term
care industry. The associate executive director is Beatrice
Martin Wood, also of Marlborough, MA.

While
New Horizons assisted living in Woburn
continues to have a waiting list of about
a year, the recent major expansion in
Marlborough has completely eliminated
such a list here. When a waiting list
exists, future residents who have completed
the application process and who have been
placed on the Priority Waiting List, are
invited to participate without charge
in various home activities.
Future
retirement living residents are encouraged
to visit for lunch or dinner from time
to time, as guests of New Horizons, to
begin familiarizing themselves with their
new home before actually moving in. For
directions to New Horizons, click here.
Please
do not hesitate to let us know if there
are any questions, or if we may assist
in any way. We are delighted that you
are considering joining our fine community
of wonderful neighbors, and will do our
best to help make your transition smooth
and pleasant. After all, this
