Because outstanding
food service is so important at New Horizons,
no effort is spared to achieve that goal. Both
New Horizons facilities have superb staffs to
prepare and serve our residents' meals, and both
try to use nothing but the finest ingredients.
The master menu
for the communities is prepared by our own professional
staff and regularly reviewed by a registered dietician.
There are distinctly different fall/winter and
spring/summer menus. Residents see the six-week
winter menu four or five times from October through
March, then they switch to the six-week summer
cycle from April through September.
There are, of
course, changes from time to time, but by and
large the menus posted below are the actual menus
in effect for the current year. Most variations
occur around major holidays, and to accommodate
special resident activities and events. Friday
evenings, for instance, there is a special Shabbat
menu for Jewish residents in Marlborough.
There are also
frequent themed meals, which often override the
menu below, but the staff always returns to the
master menu thereafter. A constant process of
reviewing and updating the master menu often incorporates
suggestions from the Resident Food Committees.
In addition to
the variable menu items shown below, there is
a large variety of popular foods which are "always
available," but are not shown on daily menus.
These typically include items like lunch or dinner
omelets, fruit, breads, peanut butter, salad sandwiches,
regular and fat free ice cream, frozen yogurt,
etc. Also not shown are homemade soups at most
luncheon and/or dinner meals. A "catch-of-the-day"
will sometimes be substituted for specific seafood
entrees shown, due to market availability.
