Massachusetts retirement living
at The Meadows

The Meadows is part of one of New England's finest and most respected and inexpensive independent and assisted living communities in the Metro west area of Boston. Only 13 miles west of Boston's main circumferential highway, New Horizons Retirement Community is just off Route 20 in Marlborough, MA. Come and visit this wonderful, friendly place, where more than 400 seniors already enjoy good living and each other.

There are very few things more important to the full enjoyment of our retirement years than good health, companionship, and comfort in the place we choose to live. Better retirement communities such as this one offer a country inn-like atmosphere at a cost that is typically much less than the cost of living alone in a home.

The Meadows buildings are designed for the fully independent active senior. Sharing a beautiful 40-acre campus directly adjacent to New Horizons' assisted living building, and surrounded by more than 100 acres of wooded conservation land, these spacious one and two-bedroom units include generous common areas, in-unit washer / dryers, fully applianced kitchens, and large, tiled baths.

Independent and Full-Service Retirement - Boston, MA

Every day, the choices we make determine the quality of our lives. As we grow older, it is often desirable to alter our housing arrangements while adapting to our changing circumstances. Locating a low cost Massachusetts seniors community which provides a caring, convenient environment, and meets our personal needs, becomes more important with each passing year.

The Meadows retirement community in Marlborough, MA is proud to offer a very affordable independent living arrangement for active individuals or couples who still want to live completely on their own, but who want the convenience of knowing that help is nearby if needed. Additionally, the Full-Service Retirement option at The Meadows brings planned events, light house-keeping, and three daily meals to further ease residents into a carefree retirement.

Home-cooked meals perhaps do the most for our fine reputation, because the exquisite dining rooms just always seem to become the center of everyone's attention. Meadows residents may take daily breakfast, while Full-Service Retirement includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meal quality, variety, nutrition and overall appeal become extraordinarily important as we enjoy our later years. There are typically three dinner choices each evening.

All apartments in this central Massachusetts retirement community are fully private, most with very nice oversized bathrooms, generous full kitchens, and lots of large windows. There is abundant free parking for all, and a very efficient private bus which many residents use for their local-area shopping trips, etc. Of course, many services may also be brought "to the door" for those residents who wish. Local firms like Domino's and Papa Gino's, for instance, come into The Meadows just like they come to every other neighborhood in town.

All units are serviced with full telephone, cable, and Internet capability. Wi-Fi is also available in the Town Center at New Horizons, next door. There is a special office on-site for visiting physicians, and other professionals, and New Horizons enjoys a "preferred provider" arrangement with Marlborough Hospital / UMASS Medical Center. Onsite emergency response RN services are also available to Meadows residents through our third party healthcare provider.

Traditional monthly activities are available, with special emphasis on health and fitness in a state of the art on-site health club. There is also a network of walking trails through the adjacent woodlands. All residents of The Meadows are also guaranteed priority access to New Horizons' comprehensive continuum of care if the need should arise.

Enjoy a unique combination of independent living arrangements with ready access to a wide variety of medical and social services if they are ever needed. Through constant attention to the needs of its residents, The Meadows' fine, experienced staff provides warm and comfortable homes for those who can live independently, and the nearby availability of extra personalized support for those who may later need assistance. Residents may select exactly the program that is right for them.

The Meadows does not advertise extravagant furnishings or an overly formal or exclusive image. Yes, this is a beautiful, well-adapted community with comprehensive amenities, but people are paramount. We focus on each resident's happiness and comfort, in ways they remember from their own unique pasts.

The Meadows is a home for all its residents. No two apartments are identical. A "cookie cutter" approach would have lessened that individuality.

The Meadows apartments are characterized by their overwhelming charm...much like that found in a cozy New England country inn.  Set on 40 gorgeous acres, the entire community is infused with a pleasant calm and New England friendliness. For many of our residents, The Meadows is not just a new home; it is a new way of life, and a better way of living.

All units have their own independently controlled heating and air conditioning systems, with heavily insulated walls. All of The Meadows' apartments have earned the "Energy Star" award sponsored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Many units have balconies or patios opening to our quaint country campus surrounded by more than 100 acres of prime conservation land. Grazing deer are frequent visitors from the abutting woodlands.

Program and Rate Information

To aid in providing a quick response in the event of an emergency, a receptionist is scheduled at New Horizons' front desk 24 hours a day, and there is an operations manager on-site seven days a week. At least one registered nurse is also scheduled on-campus, 24-hours, every day, in addition to various other 'round the clock staff in the adjacent building of New Horizons.

Although the facility is private and entirely nondenominational, New Horizons is one of few communities anywhere to offer both regular on-site Protestant and Jewish services as well as daily Catholic Mass, in our own beautiful 140-seat chapel.  Many Jewish residents enjoy their Friday evening meal together as part of New Horizons' weekly Shabbat observance.

The Meadows apartments, consisting of two new four-story buildings and three smaller buildings, with a total of 162 apartments for fully independent seniors, opened in 2002. Unlike most similar size buildings, which tend to be wood-framed construction, the two larger Meadows buildings are both steel-framed, with all poured-concrete floors. Most of the remaining New Horizons buildings have completely fireproof poured-concrete construction throughout, including their roofs. All buildings are fully sprinklered as well.

Meadows buildings are easy to get around, and all residents have access to an elegant indoor walking path inside New Horizons. Four times around the interior carpeted hallway of the "hex" is one mile!

Also available, adjacent to this remarkable country campus, are two separate specialized facilities. Hearthstone Alzheimer Care, Inc. serves 44 residents with a variety of dementia-related issues, and Robbie's Place offers assisted living care to those coping with mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. Priority access is available for residents in The Meadows apartments or in New Horizons who may later need these enhanced programs.

The large majority of residents in The Meadows retirement living community in MA have their own automobiles and drive regularly, but many also use the New Horizons bus for downtown Marlborough shopping trips, etc. Busy Bee Transportation for seniors is also a popular and low-cost option for those wanting to take a break from driving.

The Meadows is located on 40 acres of rolling meadows and woodlands, and is surrounded by deeded conservation land. Abundant animal-life, including wild turkeys, foxes and deer frequent the property. The Meadows is a rental community with no endowment, and typically no occupancy commitment beyond 60 days.

For those over age 65, who are fully independent in all respects, consider The Meadows. This fine 162 unit supplement to the continuum of care at New Horizons offers units from 600 to more than 2,200 square feet in two large buildings, and three smaller buildings, directly adjacent to New Horizons.

The Meadows, at 370 Hemenway Street, Marlborough, MA, is located just off US Route 20 at the end of Wilson Street. It is 13 miles west of Route 128 (I-95), and about halfway between downtown Boston and east Worcester. Click on "Directions" for more detailed info and map or call 508-460-5200.

A fine Massachusetts Retirement Community
Summary of features at The Meadows

As an outstanding independent community for seniors over the age of 65, The Meadows provides its residents with superb single-level homes, exceptional amenities, and distinctive design. The Meadows offers generous 600-2,200 square foot, one and two-bedroom units, with much open space and pleasant woodland or meadow views through many oversized windows. Many suites offer outside balconies or patios, professionally designed gourmet kitchens, oversized bathrooms and, on the top floor, skylights.

The Meadows is a very distinct, but integral part of the New Horizons continuing care retirement community (CCRC) in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Sharing a beautiful 40-acre campus, it is surrounded by a hundred acres of conservation land and state forest. The Meadows offers one of the most serene country settings anywhere, with convenient access to Boston and Worcester. It is located just off US Route 20, very near Longfellow's historic Wayside Inn in Sudbury, and 13 miles west of Boston's circumferential highway, Route 128/I-95.

The woodlands and meadows which virtually surround the entire campus abound in wildlife. Foxes, wild turkeys and sometimes whole families of deer at one time have all been spotted routinely, right at the edges of the parking areas.

Gracious homes as spacious as these are not often found, even in the suburbs. In addition to the exceptional design features, there are many practical features in The Meadows, including fully applianced kitchens, tile baths, full air conditioning, and in-unit washer/dryers. A variety of personal preferences and lifestyles is accommodated by many different floor plans and the Full-Service Retirement program option.

Designed to promote choices and independence, The Meadows has not cut back on the amenities. On-site banking, a hair salon, full-service fitness club, regular on-site religious services for several faiths, common lounges and dining rooms, and much more are all part of the picture. Cable television and local phone service are included.

Coming home to The Meadows means coming home to a special way of life. Not only is each home unique in its design and layout, but one will find great privacy with all the comforts and conveniences of today's retirement living at The Meadows.

The Meadows offers its residents a world of first class amenities and common area features. The architectural team has thoughtfully designed, both inside and out, a living environment that responds to the needs of today's independent active senior.

The Meadows rentals feature convenient single-floor living in elevatored buildings. Many offer skylights, patios, and balconies, and limited garage parking is also available. "The community was planned with real people in mind, to accommodate their preferences and lifestyles," Executive Director Robert D. O'Connor says. "We built homes, not just some cookie-cutter complex with no individual personality."

The dramatic lobby entrances, with their attractive plantings, cozy fireplaces, and two-story atrium, extend a warm welcome to all who come to The Meadows. Additional common area amenities include large function areas, mail rooms, libraries, and elegant dining rooms. Both 370 and 420 have large aquatic features in their main lobbies, including a 15 foot high waterfall in 420.

Outdoors, the campus has been carefully designed and professionally landscaped with extensive plantings, trees, and sitting areas. This delightful setting for The Meadows complements the continuous surrounding Marlborough green belt between The Meadows and Marlborough Country Club. In addition, there are numerous on-campus recreational areas including a very large indoor swimming pool, fitness center, and walking trails, as well as abundant free parking for residents and their guests. All residents pay a 100 percent refundable Entrance Fee and furnish a guaranty from a suitable individual, usually a family member, prior to moving in.
